The painter Léopold Robert took his own life on 20 March 1835 in his Venice studio, at the height of his fame. The central character of this film, the narrator, attempts to discover the causes of the artist's suicide with the help of his voluminous correspondence.

The story of Léopold Salvat, a retired general practitioner from Montmartre, is bored since he no longer works. An armed attack on a gas station near his home wakes him up.

Ludovic, a successful forty-something architect, begins a romance with Nathalie, the mother of two young girls, Laëtitia and Luna. As their budding love grows, Ludovic feels increasingly close to them. But when Nathalie decides to distance herself from him, he starts to lose his grip. Thus begins a long downward spiral.
